Evergreen Cemetery

Evergreen Cemetery is so cool. It’s Portland’s second-largest open space, spanning more than 230 acres in the city’s Deering section just west of Back Cove. Dating back to 1854, the Cemetery is a National Historic Landmark that’s known for footbridges and paths winding through old-growth pine and oak groves. Yes, it is an active cemetery and place of interment, but it also welcomes pedestrian visitors to appreciate both the natural landscape and the monuments and structures. The wooded wetlands that were preserved in the Cemetery’s original plan have created such a perfect habitat for herons, geese, and ducks that Maine Audubon plans field trips here for bird and wildlife watching. Walking alongside the more than 40,000 decorative markers gives you a real connection to 200 years of Portland history. Check out Evergreen for winter trekking, walking, or even biking.
