What is your name / occupation?
My name is Wendy Polstein, I am an Interior Designer and owner of Quill Design.
What are you known for now, and what would you like to be known for in the future?
I am a mom of three great kids, a Maine Guide, and an outdoorswoman, designer, collaborator, and connector of people. I am an approachable designer who is friendly and respected by the trades, with a very professional yet more relaxed approach to working with a designer.
What advice would you offer to someone new to Maine hoping to build a life here?
Mainers genuinely want to help! Only in Maine would you miss a ferry and a lobsterman pull up and ask if you need a ride, or a pharmacist hear you need something filled or have questions about a health issue and stop to help. Or when you ask a true Mainer a question, they only answer the question and do not elaborate—but they will keep on answering, and if you just ask, they will help. Mainers work hard, are kind, and work together to solve problems.
Maine is known for its work ethic. Do you think that living in such a rural state has shaped the way you approach your career and your goals?
I think so yes... I had hard working parents who felt that a handshake was as good as a contract and I often feel the same. When you say you'll do something you can count on it.
Maine is full of strong, independent women—how do you feel connected to the women around you here, whether it’s in your community or your workplace?
I work with two amazing women in my business and I'm fortunate to have made many friends both personally and professionally. Not mutually exclusive.
If there’s one thing you could change or improve for women in the workforce in Maine, what would it be, and why?
More flex time for family and work. Women are organized and productive and can get it done but sometimes need some flexibility to keep a good balance.
Maine is a place of incredible beauty but also challenging winters. How do you stay motivated during the tough months—when the days are short, and the weather is harsh?
Get outside.... experience the beauty of of Maine, guided outdoor adventures and get a dog... that will always make you go outside.
With so much focus on family and community in Maine, how do you manage the expectations that come with being a working woman in a small town or rural area?
In the last few years I have tried to let that go... you can't be all of it perfectly all the time. Life is messy sometimes.
Looking back on your career, what are you most proud of? What’s the legacy you hope to leave for the next generation of women in Maine?
I am most proud of building a design business that is approachable, collaborative with builders and subcontractors, and where, when projects are complete, my clients and I are genuinely friends and it is a good experience.
