This month’s restaurant spotlight is on Scales, one of my favorite Portland restaurants. Perched over the working waterfront, this spot is a member of the tried-and-true family of restaurants that includes Street & Company, Fore Street, and Standard Baking Company. The dining room is open for cocktail hour and dinner seven days a week, with a warm ambiance and historic character. Since Scales is located on the wharf in the busy Old Port, the complimentary valet parking is incredibly convenient.
As its name suggests and its location boasts, Scales’ menu showcases fresh-caught seafood. A raw bar complements appetizers and dinner selections that include steamed clams, seared scallops, seafood stew, cod, branzino, halibut, and – of course – lobster. The flavors are thoughtfully curated, and there is an extensive wine list to complement every dish, plus a dessert menu that makes it hard to leave.
