Portland is home to more than a handful of incredible cultural institutions, and the Children’s Museum & Theatre is one that’s especially valuable for families with school-aged children. With a mission to ‘inspire discovery and imagination through exploration and play,’ the museum offers a broad range of play-based experiences in science, art and culture, and more. Maddy’s Theatre, the museum’s resident stage company, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating children’s museum, approaching its 100th anniversary in 2023. In addition to the professional theatre productions staged each week, the museum offers two separate exploration sessions each day, on the five days a week it is open to the public (Wednesday through Sunday). The brand new, 30,000 square foot facility has recently opened on Thompson’s Point, with state-of-the-art exhibitions, play space, and extras that cater to ages ranging from toddler to teen, including an arts workshop and makerspace studio.
