The Holy Donut

The Holy Donut is so full of flavor and innovation that it’s hard to know where to begin. This donut enterprise, famous for its riced potato-based dough, began in 2010 with scratch baker Leigh Kellis experimenting in her home kitchen. She was intent on providing Portland with an incredible donut using wholesome and healthy ingredients… and she nailed it. The donuts are smooth and richly textured, and they come in more than 20 flavors that range from the staples like Old Fashioned and Maple to Honey Lavender and Triple Berry Glazed Cannoli. I just realized that even though I've been talking about my favorite local places for years now, I haven't yet mentioned this super-popular spot. My favorite flavor is the Chocolate Sea Salt, and watching these entrepreneurs grow their business into a Maine staple has been so much fun.

One of my favorite things about the Holy Donut is the story of its success. What began with Leigh baking at home has become a 5-location powerhouse with 150 dedicated employees and an inspiring legacy of community engagement. The Holy Donut offers paid time off to employees for their volunteerism and has a product donation program that helps local organizations fundraise. To me, that makes enjoying the Holy Donut even sweeter.
