Never, in fact, part of Portland but breaking off from Cape Elizabeth to become an independent town in 1895, South Portland exhibits some of the best of both its neighbors. Many young professionals are choosing South Portland for their residence. It’s a desirable choice of location for its proximity and easy commute to Portland, but SoPo has many other perks with its ‘city within a city’ feel. Southern Maine Community College is noted for its beautiful campus on the waterfront and offers online and adult ed classes. Willard Beach is sandy and mostly calm as the sea is broken by the nearby islands. Spring Point Lighthouse is a popular destination. People come for miles to savor Scratch Baking Company goods, and there are plenty of restaurants and coffee shops. As is the norm for many of these communities, there are many parks and trails to explore.

Just off the Casco Bay Bridge into the City of Portland, Knightville is a very desirable South Portland neighborhood with its own collection of shops and dining options. In South Portland you will find diversity, ocean views,  and easy access to Portland.
